Estrogen is the Secret to Better GLP-1 Success

Emerging research indicates that estrogen supplementation may enhance the weight loss effects of GLP-1. —Study in menopause showed those on semaglutide lost more weight compared to those not on hormone therapy.  Only 16 women on hormones and 90 not on hormone therapy. The group had average BMI of about 35. The non-estrogen users may not have been able to take hormone therapy.

After six months, the hormone therapy group lost approximately 13% of their body weight. Non-hormone therapy group lost about 9%. (Source) The more effective loss is the better the body composition is and the sooner you can get to treatments eliminating mid-girth fat.

Why Estrogen Helps GLP-1 Work

This synergistic effect is attributed to estrogen’s role in regulating appetite, metabolism, gut health, muscle health, and energy expenditure. Estrogen interacts with GLP-1 to enhance feelings of fullness and increase energy usage, thereby promoting weight loss. This interaction is particularly beneficial for postmenopausal women, who often experience weight gain due to declining estrogen levels. (Source)

The study didn’t explore the use of testosterone. Tesosterone users have greater muscle, fitness, and body composition benefits than just menopausal women on estrogen alone.  The study did not determine which GLP-1 would be most helped by hormone therapy.

In summary, combining estrogen therapy with GLP-1 receptor agonists may offer a more effective approach to weight management in women, especially during the menopausal transition. However, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate treatment strategy based on individual health needs.
