Period Warning Signs
Go to your gyno if any of these symptoms occur.
Heavier-Than-Usual Bleeding. If you find yourself soaking through a pad or tampon per hour or you go from one or two heavy days to at least three, it could be a sign of uterine fibroidsbenign tumors that grow along the uterine wall. They’re typically harmless but occasionally affect fertility.
Three Skipped Periods in a Row. Missing your flow for a month or two is not always cause for alarm; birth-control pills and stress are often culprits. But if three or more months go by and your period is still MIA, something’s likely amiss. You could be dangerously underweight or have a treatable hormone condition, like an underactive thyroid or polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Persistent Pelvic Pain. Cramps that don’t subside after you take OTC anti-inflammatory meds or discomfort that lasts all month could signal endometriosis
a condition where uterine tissue migrates to your abdominal cavity. Another possibility: pelvic inflammatory disease, an infection of the upper reproductive tract triggered by untreated Chlamydia or gonorrhea. Both conditions can result in infertility, so it’s crucial to get tested as soon as possible.

Menstrual Maladies
Your flow can trigger surprising side effects.
Headaches. You’re more prone to stress headaches and migraines because the level of estrogen, which helps regulate brain chemicals, is at its lowest point in your cycle. If taking regular OTC pain meds at the first twinge of discomfort doesn’t help, consider going on birth-control pills, which will keep estrogen levels even all month.
Clumsiness. It’s not your imagination if you find yourself tripping and bumping into things. Some studies of female athletes have shown that their performances tended to be slightly off during their periods, which may indicate that menstruating women may be klutzy. One explanation: PMS-related bloat may leave you less sure-footed.
Confusion. Feeling foggy just before your period is common. Though studies aren’t certain why it occurs, it could be due to changing estrogen and progesterone levels, which may affect your thinking.
Dry Eyes. Many women say their eyes feel itchy and don’t tear up as easily as usual at this time of the month. Once again, blame the plunge in estrogen: The hormone helps regulate body moisture.
