Shingles Vaccine Approved by FDA

The FDA has approved the shingles vaccine, Zostavax, for adults age 60 and older to help prevent herpes zoster (shingles). The shingles vaccine works by helping your immune system protect you from getting shingles and the associated pain and other serious complications. The first signs of shingles may include an itching, burning, tingling or painful feeling, which usually is only on one side of your body or face. A few days later, a rash appears on the same area of your skin. The shingles rash with blisters usually lasts for 2-4 weeks, and the pain associated with the blisters can be quite intense. Once the initial phase is over, nerve pain called postherpetic neuralgia can set in, which can last anywhere from 30 days to months or even years. This pain can be so severe that it disrupts your life

Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. If you have had chicken pox (over 90% of U.S. adults have), the virus remains in your body and can cause shingles. If the virus becames active again, usually later in life, it causes the painful disease called shingles. Up to one in 10 older patients will not be candidates for the vaccine.

Women’s Health Practice offers the shingles vaccine. To see if you are eligible for the vaccine and if it is covered by your insurance, please contact Women’s Health Practice.
